AI Visibility
AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity name your business when someone asks them a question you should be the answer to.
What it means
For twenty years, "getting found" meant ranking on Google. That is changing fast. A growing share of buyers now ask an AI assistant instead of typing a search query, and the assistant answers with a short list of names, not ten blue links. AI visibility is your presence on that list.
It is not the same as SEO. A page can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible to ChatGPT, because the assistant is drawing on how your business is described across the whole web, whether your site is structured in a way machines can read, and whether other trusted sources corroborate what you say about yourself.
The uncomfortable part: you cannot see it happening. When a prospect asks an AI "who's the best fractional CFO in Santa Barbara" and your name isn't in the answer, no analytics tool logs the miss. The lost customer never arrives, and never shows up in a report.
Why it matters for owner-operated businesses
AI visibility is a leading indicator. It moves before your revenue does, because it shapes which businesses even enter a buyer's consideration set. By the time a decline shows up in sales, you've already been invisible for months.
It is also winnable. The businesses showing up in AI answers today are rarely the biggest; they're the ones whose web presence is clear, consistent, and machine-readable. That's a gap a focused owner can close.
