Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that answer engines, the AI systems and featured-snippet tools that give a single direct answer, pull from your business as the source.

What it means

A traditional search engine returns a page of links and lets you choose. An answer engine returns the answer itself: the paragraph ChatGPT writes back, the box at the top of Google, the response Siri reads aloud. AEO is optimizing to be the source that answer is built from.

In practice that means writing content that directly answers real questions, structuring it with clear headings and question-and-answer formatting, adding schema markup so machines can parse it, and earning the kind of corroboration across the web that makes an answer engine trust you.

AEO overlaps with classic SEO but the target is different. SEO competes for a ranking position a human clicks. AEO competes to be the citation inside an answer the human may never click through at all.

Why it matters for owner-operated businesses

As more searches end in a direct answer instead of a click, being the answer matters more than being a link. Businesses that only optimized for the old blue-link game are quietly losing ground to ones that structured their content for the answer.

AEO is especially decisive for local and specific queries, "best medspa in Ventura for X," "winery near Los Olivos with a club," where the answer is a short list of names and being on it is the whole game.
