Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is optimizing your business's presence so that generative AI models, the large language models behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, represent and recommend you accurately when they generate a response.

What it means

Generative engines don't just retrieve a page; they compose an answer from patterns learned across enormous amounts of text, sometimes supplemented by a live web lookup. GEO is the work of making sure that when they compose an answer relevant to you, they get you right and put you forward.

It combines several things: a clear, consistent description of your business everywhere it appears online; machine-readable structure on your own site; strong corroborating signals from third-party sources; and content that actually answers the questions buyers ask a generative model.

GEO and AEO are close cousins and the terms are often used interchangeably. The useful distinction: AEO targets any system that returns a direct answer, while GEO specifically targets generative language models and how they synthesize what they "know" about you.

Why it matters for owner-operated businesses

Generative models are becoming a primary discovery surface, not a novelty. When one of them describes your category and names three businesses, the businesses it omits don't get a second chance in that conversation.

Models can also be wrong about you, stale hours, an old address, a service you no longer offer, or silent about you entirely. GEO is how you correct the record and get included.
